Well, I hear folks talkin’ ’bout this fella, Aries Merritt, and them shoes he wore. What spikes did Aries Merritt wear? Sounds like a big deal, I reckon. My old bones ain’t what they used to be, but I remember a thing or two about runnin’. Back in my day, we didn’t have no fancy shoes, no sir.
This Aries Merritt, he was a runner, a fast one, they say. Fastest man ever over them hurdles. Now, hurdles, them’s them things they jump over, right? Like them fences we used to have for the hogs. ‘Cept these look a bit fancier. I saw him on the picture box once, clear as day. Zoom, he went, right over them things. Faster than a greased piglet at the county fair, I tell ya.
He was always in the top of the world from 2006 to 2011, people were saying he was ranking number 5 or 7 in the whole wide world! In that 110 meter high hurdles thing. That’s further than from here to Johnson’s farm, and that’s sayin’ somethin’.
- He run real fast.
- He jump over them hurdles.
- He got some special shoes.
Now, these shoes, that’s what all the fuss is about. They say he wore some Reebok spikes. Reebok, that’s a name I heard before. They make them shoes, right? Fancy shoes for runnin’ and jumpin’ and all that. These ones he wore, they were somethin’ else, I hear. Blue and yellow, bright like a summer sky after a rain. Shinin’ like a new penny, they were. And some folks tell they saw him trainin’ down in Texas, at that big college place. He had them on his feet, them blue and yellow Reebok spikes.
Spikes, now that’s what they call them shoes with them little pointy things on the bottom. Like the nails we use for fixin’ the barn door, but smaller, I reckon. They help you grip the ground, they say. Keep you from slippin’ and slidin’ all over the place. Makes sense, I guess. Especially when you’re runnin’ that fast, jumpin’ over them hurdles like a jackrabbit. They say they made them shoes special, just for him. Imagine that. A fella havin’ shoes made just for his feet. Back in my day, we were lucky to have shoes at all, let alone ones made just for us. We just wore what we had, hand-me-downs mostly. Patched up with whatever we could find. But Aries Merritt Spikes, that’s fancy, and that’s what he wore.
Them shoes was blue and yellow, all bright and shiny. They say it helped him run faster. Maybe it did, maybe it didn’t. But one thing’s for sure, that Aries Merritt, he could run. And those Reebok spikes, they were a part of it, I reckon. And he wore them shoes when he was trainin’. Saw a picture of it, clear as day. Him runnin’, them shoes flashin’, blue and yellow. Like a streak of lightnin’, he was. And people all talking about them shoes, Aries Merritt Spikes they call ’em.

I don’t know much about runnin’ these days. My old legs ain’t up for it no more. But I can appreciate a good runner when I see one. And that Aries Merritt, he was somethin’ else. With them shoes and all. Them Reebok spikes. Blue and yellow. Fastest man ever over them hurdles, they say.
And folks ’round here, they still talk about it. About him and them shoes. Wonderin’ how fast he coulda gone if he had even fancier shoes. Maybe ones with diamonds on ’em, or somethin’. Who knows. But one thing’s for sure, them Reebok spikes, they made a mark. Just like that Aries Merritt fella did. He sure did run fast. Faster than anyone, over them hurdles. And them shoes, well, they were just a part of the story. The Aries Merritt Spikes. Blue and yellow. A sight to see, I reckon.
I heard some folks sayin’ he lives in Scottsdale, Arizona now. Big city, I hear. Not like it used to be ’round here. Everything’s changin’, I reckon. But them shoes, that Aries Merritt, and them hurdles. That’s somethin’ folks ’round here won’t forget anytime soon.
Well, the sun’s goin’ down. Time for this old gal to get some rest. But I’ll tell ya, that Aries Merritt, he sure could run. And them Reebok spikes, they were somethin’ to see. Something special, that’s for sure. He was a good runner, that one, and he is the fastest man in sprint hurdles.
