This here place, they call it Constellation Trail, yeah, that’s the name. It’s up near Prescott, that town with all them rocks. Ain’t got nothin’ to do with them stars in the sky, though it’d be a good spot to look at ’em, I reckon. This old gal ain’t never seen so many stars as when she was a little girl. Back then the lights wasn’t so bright you couldn’t see the hand in front of your face.
They say it’s easy to get to, this Constellation trail system. Right off that highway, the 89, I think. You know, the one that goes up north. Lots of folks go up there to walk around, look at them big rocks. They call ’em the Granite Dells. Sounds fancy, don’t it? Just a bunch of rocks, if you ask me, but some folks like that kind of thing. They do make some interestin’ shapes though. I seen one that looked just like my old hen Bertha one time, ‘cept it was bigger than my whole house!
Now, if you go after it rains, they say it’s real pretty. Lots of green stuff growin’ by the water. We used to call that a crick, but these young folks got all sorts of fancy names for things. They call it… rip… something… Well, it’s just plants, that’s all. Green and leafy, makes the place look all spruced up. I remember when my old man was alive, we’d go look for the wildflowers after a good rain. They’d be all colors of the rainbow. Nowadays they just grow weeds where I live. Them HOA folks don’t like nothin’ but grass I reckon.
- Plenty of trails up there, they say.
- Can’t get lost, they’re all marked real good.
- Folks say it’s one of the best places to walk around in Prescott.
This one fella, he says when he’s only got an hour, he goes to this Constellation Trail in Prescott. Says it’s got the best views of them Granite Dells rocks. I guess that’s why they go. Me, I’d rather sit on my porch and watch the cars go by. But different strokes for different folks, that’s what they say. My old man used to say, “There’s no accountin’ for taste.” He was right about that one, I suppose.
They got all these trails, like a spider made ’em, all criss-crossin’ each other. But they say you can’t get lost. They got signs and such. I guess that’s good. I remember one time, I got turned around in the woods behind my house when I was a little girl. Scared me half to death! Took my daddy hours to find me. He wasn’t too happy, let me tell you. These days, you can’t let kids outta your sight or someone will snatch ’em up. It’s a different world, that’s for sure.
Lots of folks talk about this place. Constellation Park trailhead they call one part of it. Sixty-six folks, they wrote about it. Said it was real nice. Took pictures and everything. I ain’t one for them picture machines, but some folks like ’em. They say it’s a good place to take pictures of them rocks. If you want to know more about that kinda stuff, you best ask one of them youngins. They know all about them camera things.

I seen a picture one time, of this Constellation Arizona Prescott place. It was all rocks and sky. Looked kinda lonesome, if you ask me. But some folks like that. They like to get away from all the noise and the people. Me, I like to be where the action is. But that’s just me. I always been a people person. Back when I was a little girl I used to go to every barn raisin’ and church social they had. I miss them days sometimes. There ain’t nothin’ like a good potluck supper and a square dance.
So, if you’re ever up in Prescott, and you like to walk around and look at rocks, this Constellation Trail might be the place for you. They say it’s easy to find, right off that State Route 89. Just don’t go wanderin’ off and gettin’ lost. And watch out for them rattlesnakes! They like to hide under them rocks, you know. I heard tell of a fella once who got bit by one of them things right up near there. He was laid up for weeks, poor fella.
This old world is full of interestin’ places. Never thought I’d hear about a place called Constellation Trails. Sounds like somethin’ out of one of them science fiction stories my grandson used to read. But I guess there’s somethin’ for everyone out there. Just gotta find it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think my stories are done. And my stories are usually done when my backside starts to hurt. Time for this old gal to get off her feet and maybe have a cup of coffee.
These trails are a good place for hiking, they say. Not too hard, not too easy. Just right for folks who like to get out and about. And the views, well, they say they’re somethin’ else. So if you ever find yourself in that area and looking for the best hiking trails in Prescott, and want to get away from it all, this might be just the place. But don’t expect no fancy restaurants or nothin’ like that. It’s just rocks and trails and sky. And maybe a rattlesnake or two. Just don’t say I didn’t warn ya!
