Today I wanted to figure out the price of scrap iron per pound. It’s something I’ve been curious about for a while, and I finally decided to dive in and find out.
Looked up the Current Scrap Prices
First thing I did was hit up the internet to see what the going rate was. I found a bunch of websites that list the current scrap prices, and it looks like the price of scrap iron is fluctuating quite a bit.
- Fumbled around a bit before finding a site that seemed reliable.
- Saw that the prices were listed as of January 12th.
- Noticed the prices were in US dollars per pound (USD/Lb).
Checked Out Local Scrap Yards
Next, I tried to find some local scrap yards in my area. I figured they’d have the most up-to-date prices. I found a directory of scrap yards in the US and Canada, which was pretty handy.
- Spent some time browsing through the listings for my area.
- Called a few places to get quotes, but some of them didn’t pick up.
- Jotted down the prices that I did manage to get.
Got the Prices from a Specific Place
I also stumbled upon a site that listed the average prices paid by scrap yards in Houston, Texas. I figured this would give me a good idea of what to expect, even though I’m not in Houston.
- Glanced over the prices for different types of metals, including iron.
- Noticed that these prices were state averages, so they might be a bit different elsewhere.
Learned About Getting the Best Prices
Then, I found an article that talked about how to get the best prices for your scrap metal. It had some good tips, like checking around with multiple buyers and making sure you know what you’ve got.
- Read through the article and made a mental note of the tips.
- Realized that getting the best price takes a bit of work, but it’s worth it.
Found Daily Spot Prices
Finally, I came across a site that offered daily spot prices for different metals, including iron. It said that the prices were gathered from a variety of public sources and might be delayed up to one day.

- Checked out the current spot price for iron and compared it to what I’d found earlier.
- Felt like I had a pretty good grasp on the range of iron scrap prices for today.
Overall, it was a productive day of research. I definitely learned a lot more about scrap iron prices than I knew before. It’s always interesting to see how these prices change and what affects them. Now I feel much more informed, and if I ever need to sell scrap iron, I’ll know where to start!
