Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to try my hand at making a rug for ages, and I finally dove in with this constellation idea. It seemed cool, and honestly, I figured it would be a good way to learn the ropes.
First off, I gathered all my stuff. I picked up some yarn in a few different colors – you know, dark blues and blacks for the background, and then some lighter shades for the stars. I also got a big piece of fabric for the backing, some of that non-slip stuff, so the rug wouldn’t go sliding all over the place. Oh, and of course, the tools! I borrowed a punch needle from a friend who’s really into crafting. And some scissors. Always need those.
Next up, I sketched out a basic design. I didn’t want anything too complicated, so I just drew some simple constellations, like the Big Dipper and Orion. I’m no artist, but it was good enough to get the general idea across. Then, I transferred the design onto the backing fabric. I just used a light pencil, nothing fancy.
Now for the fun part – punching! This was totally new to me, but it’s actually pretty straightforward. You just thread the yarn through the punch needle and start poking it through the fabric, following the lines of your design. It’s kind of like painting with yarn, in a weird way.

I started with the background, filling in all the dark, spacey areas. It took a while, not gonna lie. My hand definitely got a little tired, but it was also kind of relaxing, in a repetitive sort of way.

Once the background was done, I moved on to the stars. I used a few different colors for these, just to make them pop a bit more. I messed up a few times and had to pull out some stitches, but that’s okay. Part of the learning process, right?
After I was finished with all the punching, I flipped the whole thing over to see how it looked. Not bad! A little wonky in places, but overall, I was pretty stoked with how it was turning out.
The last step was to secure everything. I applied some strong adhesive to the back of the fabric, and pressed it onto some strong material. After it all dried, I trimmed the edges to make it all nice and neat.
The Final Result
And that’s it! My very own, handmade constellation rug. It’s definitely not perfect, but I’m super proud of it. It was a fun project, and I learned a ton along the way. Maybe I’ll try another one soon, with a more complicated design this time. Or maybe I’ll just stick to admiring this one for a while. It’s currently chilling in my living room, and it makes me smile every time I see it. I did it!
