Okay, so the other day I got this wild idea to try and predict the weather using, wait for it, my cat! I know, it sounds nuts, but I stumbled upon this thing called “felidomancy” or “ailuromancy”. Apparently, it’s an old school way of telling the future using a cat’s movements. I figured, why not give it a shot? It sounded like a fun experiment.
The Setup
First, I needed my test subject – my fluffy, sometimes grumpy, cat, Mittens. She’s got a mind of her own, which I thought would be perfect for this. Then, I cleared out a space in the living room. I wanted to make sure she had enough room to move around without bumping into anything. I grabbed a notebook and pen to jot down my observations, feeling like a real scientist, ha!
The “Experiment” (aka Watching Mittens Do Her Thing)
- Phase 1: The Initial Romp. I let Mittens loose in the cleared space. At first, she just sniffed around cautiously, like she always does when something’s different. I watched which direction she went.
- Phase 2: Jump Around. Then came the fun part – watching her jump. I noticed she was more interested in leaping onto the windowsill, where she could watch the birds. I tried to figure out if the height or direction of her jumps meant anything.
- Phase 3:The Chill. Finally, Mittens chose a cozy spot to settle in for a nap. This time she headed for my dark blue armchair.
Results and “Divination”
Now, for the “divination” part. I tried to remember what I read.
So from that I tried to conclude that her jump up to the window to watch the birds may imply for clear sky.
And she finally slept on my dark blue armchair, so I guess dark means cloudy weather?
Based on Mittens’s actions, I boldly predicted… a slightly cloudy day with lots of sunshine. We would see!

The Actual Weather
The next day? It was sunny with a bit of cloud! I’m not saying Mittens is a magical weather forecaster, but it was surprisingly close. Maybe there’s something to this whole cat divination thing, or maybe it was just a lucky guess. Either way, it was a fun way to spend an afternoon with my cat, and I got a good laugh out of it.
I’ll probably try this again, just for kicks. Who knows, maybe Mittens will surprise me with her weather-predicting skills again!
