Well, howdy there! Today, we’re gonna yak about somethin’ I heard on the radio – them stars and what folks call ’em. Sounds fancy, but it ain’t so bad once you get the hang of it.
You know, lookin’ up at the sky at night, you see all them twinkly lights. Some folks, they got names for bunches of ’em, like connect-the-dots pictures, I reckon. They call ’em constellations. Big word, huh? Means nothin’ more than a group of stars that make a shape.
Now, one of these shapes, they say it looks like a bear. Yep, a big ol’ bear up there in the sky! They call it Ursa Major. Sounds like somethin’ a doctor would say, but it just means “Big Bear” in some old-timey language. And wouldn’t you know it, there’s a little bear too! They call that one Ursa Minor, or “Little Bear”. Clever, ain’t they?
- Ursa Major – The Big Bear
- Ursa Minor – The Little Bear
Folks in these parts, we don’t see no bears wanderin’ around much anymore, but I hear tell there used to be plenty. Maybe that’s why them old-timers looked up and saw bears in the stars. Makes you think, don’t it?
Now, this Ursa Minor, the Little Bear, it’s got a special star in it. Folks call it the North Star or the Pole Star. It’s important ’cause it always stays in the same place, kinda like a guidepost in the sky. Used to be, before all these fancy GPS things, sailors and travelers would use that star to find their way at night. Imagine that! Just a little star tellin’ you which way to go.
I heard on that radio show, folks are always tryin’ to figure out these star names. They even got these things called crosswords, where they give you clues and you gotta guess the words. One of the clues they was talkin’ about was somethin’ like, “Bear in constellation names.” And the answer, well, it could be Ursa Major or Ursa Minor, dependin’ on whether they want the big bear or the little one.

And get this, there’s even a biggest constellation. Bigger than any bear, big or small. They call it Hydra. It’s so big, it takes up a whole lotta space up there. Makes them bears look like little cubs, I reckon.
It’s kinda funny how folks hundreds of years ago looked at the same stars we do now and made up all these stories and names. Makes you wonder what stories they told ‘round the campfire under them stars. Probably not much different than the ones we tell now – stories about animals, and huntin’, and findin’ your way home. ‘Cept they had a whole sky full of bears and snakes and such to point to while they was tellin’ ‘em.
So, next time you’re out at night, look up at them stars. See if you can spot them bears. It ain’t as hard as you might think. And if you get lost, well, just find that North Star. It’ll point you in the right direction, just like it did for folks a long, long time ago. And if you get stuck on a crossword puzzle, remember what I told ya – “Bear in constellation names” means Ursa somethin’ or other. You’ll figure it out.
Anyhow, that’s all I got to say about them star bears and such. Just somethin’ to think about next time you’re lookin’ up at the night sky.
