Alright, let’s gab about this here… uh… zoh-dee-ack jem-in-eye neck-lace thingy. You know, the kind them city folks wear.
First off, what in the tarnation is a “zodiac” anyway? Sounds fancy. My grandpappy used to say, “Look to the stars, gal, they’ll tell ya somethin’.” Guess this “zodiac” is kinda like that, huh? Tells ya ’bout when you was born and what kind of person you are. This jem-in-eye, that’s one of them star signs, like a bull or a fish or somethin’.
Now, this necklace, it’s got this jem-in-eye sign on it. I reckon it’s for folks born under that sign. Kinda like wearin’ your birthday on your neck, I s’pose. They say it brings ya good luck or somethin’. Shoot, I could use some of that luck, especially with them chickens layin’ fewer eggs these days.
Them city folks, they make these necklaces outta all sorts of stuff. Some shiny silver, some gold, like them fancy watches the salesman tried to sell me last year, claiming they gonna make me rich, yeah right! Gold’s pretty, but it ain’t gonna help me plow the fields, that’s for sure. And that silver stuff? Looks nice, but will it keep the weeds outta my garden? I doubt it.
I seen some with green stones on ’em. Emeralds, they call ’em. Folks say green’s a lucky color for jem-in-eyes. Makes sense, I guess. Green’s the color of spring, when everything starts growin’ again. And money, ha! wouldn’t that be nice to have more of it?

- They got all sorts of shapes and sizes too. Some are just plain little signs, some are all fancy with swirls and whatnots.
- Some are big and bold, like a rooster crowin’ at sunrise. Some are small and dainty, like a little flower in the field.
- There’s ones that even got extra dangly things, like little stars or moons or somethin’. I tell ya, them city folk got too much time on their hands if they can come up with all this stuff.
And who wears these things? Well, mostly women, I reckon. Young girls and grown women too. I guess they like to show off their star sign, or maybe they just think it looks pretty. Some fellas wear ’em too, but not as much. They prefer them big ol’ belt buckles with eagles on ’em, or them trucker hats.
They say this necklace is a good gift. You know, for birthdays or holidays or whatever. I guess that’s better than givin’ someone a pair of socks, ain’t it? But honestly if I was gonna give a gift I’d give a nice homemade jam, that will last longer than some shiny rock hanging from your neck! But hey, to each their own I guess.
But what I really don’t get is why they cost so much. I mean, it’s just a little piece of metal and maybe a stone. Heck, I could probably make one myself outta some wire and a pretty rock I found in the creek. But then again, them city folk, they like to spend their money on fancy things. Me? I’d rather spend it on a good plow or some feed for the chickens. That’s money well spent.
Anyways, that’s about all I know ’bout this zoh-dee-ack jem-in-eye neck-lace. Seems like a lot of fuss over nothin’, if you ask me. But hey, if it makes them city folks happy, then more power to ’em. Me? I’ll stick to my overalls and my good ol’ sun hat. They might not be fancy, but they get the job done. And that’s all that matters.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a gift for a jem-in-eye, or if you just want somethin’ shiny to wear around your neck, then I guess this necklace is alright. Just don’t expect it to plow your fields or lay your eggs for ya. You still gotta do that yourself.
And one more thing… if you do get one of these necklaces, make sure it’s got a good strong clasp. Wouldn’t want it fallin’ off and gettin’ lost in the chicken coop. Now that would be a waste of good money, wouldn’t it?
